Postdoctoral Appointee - Additive Manufacturing for Microelectronic Systems

Posting Duration

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking postdoctoral appointments to conduct experimental research and technology development to integrate additive manufacturing and other advanced manufacturing processes to realize custom electronic components for national security. Our team’s research vision is to develop and apply new manufacturing technologies for microelectronic components deployed in national security applications, such as, high voltage and radio frequency components. These components must have high reliability and robustness in high radiation and stressing mechanical environments. Successful applicants will join a dynamic, multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers in an exciting research environment with outstanding respect for quality of life!
Ideal candidates will have expertise in materials science and mechanical engineering and experience in additive manufacturing with electronic materials, such as, conductive metals, high strength materials, such as, structural ceramics, materials for adhesion, such as, for glass-to-metal seals, and integrating multiple manufacturing technologies. However, expertise and experience in related fields will also be considered. Selected candidates will be given the opportunity to learn missing necessary skills from the rest of the team. The successful candidate will thus acquire extensive knowledge in advanced manufacturing regardless of their incoming knowledge base.
On a given day, you may be called upon to:
  • Apply existing knowledge and gain new knowledge toward advanced manufacturing of microelectronic systems.
  • Conduct research and publish.
  • Work in a team environment and contribute your knowledge to the team.
  • Interact with other scientists and engineers to seek technical problems.
*This postdoctoral appointment is an opportunity to continue an engineer/scientist’s early career growth. The desired characteristics below represent both potential starting points and opportunities for growth in this position.

Qualifications We Require

  • A recent Ph.D. in materials science or mechanical engineering, or in a related science or engineering field.
  • Experience in additive manufacturing, including materials, materials processing, and materials characterization.
  • Hands on experience in modifying and maintaining additive manufacturing tools.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q clearance

Qualifications We Desire

Ideally, we would like to see your background include some of the following:
  • Aerosol or spray printing of electronic conductors and dielectrics.
  • Tool path programming
  • Designing and building custom AM tools
  • Integration of multiple AM processes to make a product
  • Finite element analysis for mechanical and thermal environments,
  • Proven ability to work independently and in teams
  • Dedication to laboratory safety
We would also like to see that you possess the following qualities in order to work in a high-performing team environment:
  • Technical background and eagerness to learn new tools/techniques and to share knowledge with the team
  • Flexibility to changing tasks and projects as needed
  • Problem-solving skills to develop creative technical solutions
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Eagerness to work and share in a multi-disciplinary team environment
  • The addition of diversity to the department through background, experience, interests, etc.

About Our Team

You will be part of the MEMS Technology Department (http://mems.sandia.gov/). We conduct research and development for advanced micro-electromechanical systems that push the technology envelope for national security applications. Our broad R&D portfolio includes traditional MEMS sensors and actuators (e.g., inertial sensors and switches), piezoelectric devices (e.g., ultrasonic transducers), RF/acoustic devices (e.g., RF filters), opto/acoustic devices (e.g., optical modulators), magnetic and photovoltaic devices, and emerging technologies. We also develop and maintain a comprehensive set of MEMS fabrication processes in Sandia's MESA Silicon and Micro Fabs, where we build MEMS with traditional bulk and surface micromachining, piezoelectric films, damascene and electrodeposited metals, through substrate vias, wafer bonding, and other semiconductor fab processes. MEMS is an interdisciplinary field. So, our team includes a great diversity of technical backgrounds, including electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, chemical engineering, materials science, chemistry, physics, nuclear engineering, and even civil engineering. We highly value technical competence and entrepreneurial spirit. We embrace diversity of all kinds and strive for an inclusive environment.

Position Information

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.
Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
