Experimental Thermal & Aeroscience Postdoctoral Appointee

Posting Duration

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee with an interest in the development and application of advanced diagnostics in challenging thermal, fluid, solid-mechanics and aerodynamic environments to join a multidisciplinary team of researchers. Applications include multiphase flows, hypersonic wind tunnels, shock tubes, energetic materials and combustion. In this role, you will have access to state-of-the-art laser sources, high-speed cameras, advanced optical sensors, and test facilities. The candidate would be expected to contribute at scientific conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
  • Work with the mentorship of Sandia staff to perform world-class research focused on the development, validation and application of advanced diagnostics for thermal, fluid, solid-mechanics and aerodynamic environments relevant to Sandia’s national security mission.
  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and develop laboratory-wide collaborations across multiple Sandia organizations.
  • Design and perform experiments utilizing laser-based and imaging diagnostic techniques to realize project goals.
  • Publish and present results to the scientific community through technical conferences and peer-reviewed journals.
  • Perform all duties in compliance with operational safety, security and quality guidelines.

Qualifications We Require

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or closely related field
  • Experience with laser diagnostic measurement techniques for fluid dynamic, combustion, energetic materials, wind tunnel applications, or related fields
  • Demonstrated capability to conduct experimental research and communicate results to the wider scientific community through technical publications and presentations
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L clearance

Qualifications We Desire

  • Expertise in and experience operating high-energy nanoscecond, picosecond, and/or femtosecond laser systems
  • Experience with laser diagnostic techniques such as coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS), planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF), digital in-line holography (DIH), particle image velocimetry (PIV), femtosecond laser electronic exciting tagging (FLEET), tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS), spontaneous Raman scattering (SRS), and/or filtered Rayleigh scattering (FRS).
  • Experience using scientific cameras, data acquisition, signal processing methods and/or associated computer tools in association with laboratory experiments.

Position Information

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.
Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.

About Our Team

Sandia's Engineering Sciences Experimental Facility offers challenging and important work relating to national security in R&D and technology applications in aerodynamics, aerothermodynamics, compressible fluid mechanics, multiphase and reactive flows, and shock physics. We develop the expertise needed to adapt measurement techniques to challenging environments and understand the additional uncertainty which may be introduced. For model validation and data-driven modeling, we work in tandem with modelers to design optimum experiments. Recent post-doctoral researchers in our group have gone on to faculty positions at research universities and staff positions at national laboratories. Our primary mission supports U.S. Department of Energy Defense Programs, as well as projects funded through the U.S. Department of Defense, NASA, and industry.

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by the DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
