Nanophotonic & Microphotonic Research - Postdoctoral Appointee

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee in the Photonic and Phononic Microsystems Department with an emphasis in nanophotonic and microphotonic technologies!
On any given day, you may be asked to:
  • Support research involving silicon photonics, nanophotonics, nano-opto-mechanics, quantum optics, and/or nonlinear optics
  • Support research in areas including optical metamaterials, optical emitters and detectors, optical interconnect, optical-forces in nano-optomechanical system, integrated quantum optical systems, plasmonic and phononic devices, and other optical technologies
  • Design, simulate, fabricate, and/or characterize novel optical devices, materials, and systems
  • Study new physics phenomenon, evaluate new concepts and applications
  • Report research results in top-tier journals and conferences
  • Generate new intellectual property through patent filing


Qualifications We Require

  • Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering or Science, Physics, or other related STEM technical areas, conferred within five years prior to employment
  • Experience in design/simulation and characterization of optical metamaterials, optical materials, and/or optical devices
  • Experience in developing or using finite element method tools, such as COMSOL, Matlab/Simulink, FDTD codes, etc.
  • Experience performing original research, demonstrated through a record of invention, original publication in top-tier journals, and conference papers and presentations.
  • Ability to acquire a DOE Q security clearance


Qualifications We Desire

Ideally, your background would also include:
  • Experience in design and simulation of novel optical structures and optical metamaterials with commercial or custom codes, including numerical techniques for optimization and sensitivity analysis
  • Familiar with group theory applications to metamaterials, basic theories for treatment of nonlinear phenomena, solid state physics and phenomena and physical optics, optical isolators and circulators
  • Experience with laboratory optical bench optics, electronics, optoelectronics, and safe use of lasers; able to craft and carry out laser-based optical experiments
  • Familiar with nonlinear optical measurement techniques, infrared, near infrared, and terahertz optical test and characterization techniques, associated optics, detectors and spectroscopies
  • Familiar with micro and nano fabrication processes, tools, and metrology
  • Expertise in C++ programming for scientific computing and GUI development.
  • Self-motivated, with strong communications skills and the ability to work both independently and in a team environment
  • Expertise in integrated photonics, nonlinear optics, ultrafast optics, solid state physics, materials, or related topics

The Photonic and Phononic Microsystems Department develops state of the art photonic and phononic technologies for a variety of national security purposes. Our team of interdisciplinary researchers innovates, matures, and applies novel technologies including silicon photonics, nanophotonics, guided wave optics, optical detectors, nano-optomechanics, metamaterials, plasmonics, heterogeneous integration, phononic and thermoelectric technologies, spanning fundamental research and path-finding engineering solutions.

Position Information

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.
Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.

Security Clearance

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) granted Q-level security clearance.
Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
