Intern, Educators & Instruction (Master's Student)

Overview

Established in 1946, the American Institutes for Research (AIR) is one of the world's largest behavioral and social science research and evaluation organizations. Our mission is to generate and use rigorous evidence that contributes to a better, more equitable world. AIR works with federal, state, and local government agencies, philanthropies and other organizations to conduct research and evaluation and provide technical assistance in the areas of education, health and workforce development, in the U.S. and abroad.
 
AIR’s 2021 Virtual Summer Internship Program is designed to identify, attract, and hire the best collegiate talent that will drive creativity and innovation while enabling the organization to create a diverse and skilled talent pool. Spanning 10 – 12 weeks, AIR’s paid summer program provides Interns and Scholars with various learning and networking opportunities that enhance their skillset and build lasting professional connections.
 
AIR is currently seeking a Summer Intern to join our Defense STEM Education Consortium (DSEC) project team during our 2021 Virtual Summer Internship Program. DSEC is a collaborative partnership between academia, industry, not-for-profit organizations, and government that aims to broaden STEM literacy and develop an agile future workforce, especially among K-16 students underserved in STEM and/or those that have military-connections. AIR serves as the evaluation arm of DSEC working with the DoD to establish evaluation criteria, assisting partners in data collection, and generating evidence of progress towards DSEC goals.  


Responsibilities

  • Shadow project leadership with internal and external client meetings
  • Conduct a literature review for the funding agency (Department of Defense)
  • Assist in the revision and finalization of qualitative and quantitative data collection instruments
  • Support data collection activities including partner corresponding and reviewing partner reporting
  • Schedule interviews with stakeholders and conduct interviews (if necessary)
  • Prepare documents, portions of reports that describe and interpret findings of analyses
  • Clearly communicate knowledge of the project purpose and objectives to clients when necessary and represent AIR in a professional manner.
  • Other project assignments as needed
  • Work independently and in team-based projects


Qualifications

  • Currently seeking a Master’s degree in such fields as Social Sciences (Economics, Psychology, Public Policy, Sociology, etc.), Education, or a STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) related field
  • Interest in or experience with STEM education, ArcGIS, working with military-connected communities or communities underserved in STEM a plus
  • Comfortable working independently and as a member of a team
  • Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy when writing
  • Effective communicator

Candidates must be eligible to work onsite in our U.S. AIR offices for the duration of the internship.
