Description of Job:
This position is an Electrical/Electronics Captain, CSLTS III for the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) at a Canon City Correctional Facility. Primary responsibilities include ensuring the safety and security of the general public, staff and offenders and supervising staff and operations within the physical plant of the complex. Position prepares offenders for community reentry by promoting the Colorado Department of Corrections Mission, Vision and Values while adhering to a high level of integrity and commitment.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Ensure safe, efficient, compliant and cost effective electrical/electronics systems and their preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance;
- Ensure strict compliance with the National Electric Code (NEC) and all other applicable regulations, policy, guidelines and standards, keeping accurate and timely records;
- Ensure the safety and security of facility and work sites;
- Promotes a high level of performance by setting the work standard according to agency mission, vision and values. This includes the supervision of staff who also supervise other staff and offenders;
- Participates in the development of security policies;
- Ensure individuals in assigned work unit comply with all applicable CDOC and facility policies;
- Participate in hiring process by interviewing candidates and making recommendations; ensuring accurate position descriptions, preparing performance plans, and conducting performance evaluations according to agency Performance Management Program (PMP); monitoring and documenting staff performance in order to develop individual performance plans and support thoughtful evaluations;
- Ensure all assigned staff are trained in the safe and correct use of tools, equipment, procedures and security protocol;
- Resolve informal staff and/or offender grievances and initiating corrective/disciplinary action if needed;
- Ensure safe, code compliant and efficient construction, remodeling or refurbishing of facility buildings and grounds by reviewing project function, design and blueprints, coordinating with project supervisors and plant manager and delegating required work based on safety and security factors and efficient use of resources; position monitors progress, staff and offender workers through all phases of projects. Position assists in generating Project Directives, Contingency Requests and Controlled Maintenance Requests;
- Monitor budget, and maintaining inventory and accurate documentation and record keeping for all assigned areas;
- On a rotational basis, position serves as the facility duty officer;
The Electrical/Electronics Captain may act as the Facility Project Manager for large scale capital improvement jobs; reviewing plans for each phase of construction while coordinating with contractors, Physical Plant Manager, Custody Control and other facility trades supervisors, ensuring efficiency, security and safety throughout projects.
Position may be required to supervise additional staff in the absence of other supervisors; may be required to work outside during inclement weather, work in close proximity to industrial equipment and in high, tight and/or confined spaces.
Position is subject to call back and working additional hours and/or shifts to maintain safe and secure operations.
Minimum Qualifications:

License - Active Journeyman or Master Electrician License in good standing through the Colorado Depatment of Regulatory Agencies (DORA). Please attach a copy with your application.
Necessary Special Requirement - Master Electrician License in good standing through the Colorado Depatment of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) within one year of hire.
Experience - Six (6) years of employment experience performing preventative, predictive and corrective maintenance and/or installations of electrical systems or repairing, maintaining, installing, modifying, calibrating, adapting and fabricating electronic systems and equipment within a facility.
Substitution:
Completion of formal education at an accredited, non-correspondence trade/vocational school, college or university that resulted in demonstrated competencies equivalent to those gained through the required experience may be substituted for the experience on a year for year basis. Required Competencies:

- Proficiency in physical plant operations and systems, especially electrical and electronic devices;
- Proficiency in supervision of personnel;
- Extensive knowledge of CDOC policies;

- Ability to read blueprints, conduct relevant research and create an estimate of time, material, labor and cost for projects;
- Ability to plan and ensure effective implementation of best methods and strategies to accomplish safe, compliant operations at optimal efficiency;
- Sense of pride in work and a strong desire to effectively communicate with and supervise staff and offenders in a highly regulated environment while coordinating with other shops and trades and ensuring uninterrupted operations in assigned areas of responsibility;

- Ability to maintain security, visually observe and monitor offender whereabouts and maintain an accurate count in work sites and assigned areas;

- Ability to effectively communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing;
