Save the Children

Resource Mobilization Intern

July - August 2019 • Dhaka, Dhaka Division

What I liked

As I was the only intern in my department, I was expected to be very independent and proactive. However, everyone was always very kind and willing to help. If I was confused about something or had other questions, I never hesitated to approach my boss and team.

Writing

June - July 2018 • Colombo, Sri Lanka

What I liked

I enjoyed seeing international development in action. My favorite part was designing and leading a storytelling workshop for field staff to promote ethical and effective interviews with clients.

What I wish was different

I wish I had had more work. I didn’t feel challenged and spent a lot of my day doing personal reading.

Advice

Internships are always worthwhile, whether you gain valuable career experience or learn that the job or field isn’t for you, like I did.

Research and Prospect Management Intern

June - August 2018 • Fairfield, CT

What I liked

The people I worked with were very smart and passionate, and it felt good to be doing something positive for the world.

What I wish was different

I would have liked to have been paid and I am not super interested in the resource development aspects of my role.

Advice

STC is a great organization and is planning on paying their interns in the future so I would recommend applying if you’re interested in the non-profit sector.

Content Marketing Operations Intern

June - August 2018 • Fairfield, CT

What I liked

I loved how this job exposed me to a variety of Marketing sects (Communications, Campaigning, Social Media, & Publicity/PR). My manager had me set up meetings with different directors and this is how I was able to network with other departments. I enjoyed this part of my internship the most because I was able to ask the directors questions such as, "how did you get from college to Save the Children?", "what is your function at Save the Children?", and "what do you like most about your job?". Asking these questions helped me narrow down what I want to pursue with marketing. Also, I enjoyed working on projects where I could utilize my creativity. These projects involved putting together Digital Content Collections, and constructing the Content Corner of the "Weekly Word" (Save the Children's newsletter).

What I wish was different

I wish I had done more creative tasks, instead of spending a majority of my summer copying and pasting ID numbers/labeling each ID on Excel.

Advice

If I could offer anyone advice about this experience, I would tell them to be prepared for the unexpected. For instance, the job description for my job was not exactly what I worked on for the entire summer. There was never any mention of photo migration, yet that ended up being my duty for the most part. There was never any mention of skill-development work shops, or one-on-one meetings with directors. For any job (& in life), I recommend being prepared for the unexpected. If the task you are assigned to do it completely different than the job description, then bring that up to your supervisor. However, if the task you are assigned is relevant to your job then you should go into it with an open mind - it will turn out to be a great learning experience!
