Marine Science and Education Fellow

August 2021 - June 2022 • Gloucester, MA

What I liked

There is lots of opportunity for upward mobility, you can easily make your own schedule, there is both variety and flexibility between teams and projects, gives the opportunity to make a difference in Massachusetts community, and great for building skills related to teamwork

What I wish was different

There could definitely be more structure and clarification on roles, tasks, etc. Most of this is due to a frequently rotating team of management. It would also be nice if there was less general chaos when dealing with inter-departmental issues.

Advice

Seaside is great for a summer internship or even during the school year due to the organizations strong flexibility in terms of work schedule. It is also a good introduction to non-profit and sustainability work. However if your looking for a structured job with opportunities after University for payed work this is not for you.

Intern

May - August 2020 • Gloucester, MA

What I liked

There was a lot of variety within the types of projects you could work on. There is something for all interests and many ways to develop new skills.

What I wish was different

Lack of communication and no clear leadership. It was difficult to now what I was supposed to be working on and how I was doing in the role.

Advice

If you are passionate about the environment and are looking for an experience that will allow you to develop applicable skills (grant writing, curriculum building, fundraising, etc) this may be a great experience, just be warned of the lack of leadership and structure.

Marketing Outreach Coordinator

April - July 2019 • Gloucester, MA

What I liked

Loved the flexibility and control I had over the projects I would do. They really let you build your internship around things you're interested in.

What I wish was different

I wish it was a little more organized and my expectations were clearly outlined.

Advice

Time management! Because you're primarily in charge of your own projects, you really have to practice time management to complete them before deadlines.

Project Manager

June - August 2018 • Rockport, MA

What I liked

I liked the freedom that came with being a part of a very small and relatively young organization. I got to write by-laws for the Town of Rockport that actually got passed (with 95% of the vote!!!) It was amazing doing work that I cared about and really being able to take charge of the project.

What I wish was different

While one of my favorite things about this internship was the fact that I had little oversight, I often found myself wishing for a bit more direction on my projects.

Advice

Take all of the opportunities that come and do your very best to make the most of them. Also - make connections where ever you can.
